Please Note: Although we try to meet every Friday, there is no SWRS meeting on Christmas Day – that would be stretching family tolerance too far!
But there IS a meeting on New Year's Day...
Start the New Year in style with your SWRS friends, for an evening of transport films at The Manor.

Also, hopefully, the Lima 'beer train' will make its annual appearance on the model railway as well.

Although one of the shortest in the country, the Windsor Branch Line saw a wide variety of traffic in its heyday: through passenger trains from Paddington, daily freight services, excursions from all over Britain, and, of course the Royal Trains.
SWRS member, Dave Grant, will be giving a presentation on 'our' branch line.

Films have been made at Ealing Studios since 1902, with some of the best known dating from 1948-55. Many featured railway-based sequences: the Underground train in Passport to Pimilco, the approach to Kings Cross station in The Ladykillers, and, of course, Titfield Thunderbolt, to name but three.
SWRS Social Secretary, John Coke, has a Huntley-esque* interest in the portrayal of railways and other transport on the big screen, and will be sharing some gems from his collection.

Christian Wolmar – well-known transport broadcaster and award-winning writer – pays welcome a return visit to The Manor with a presentation based on his book "To the Edge of The World".
It's the world's longest railway. At nearly 6000 miles, the Trans-Siberian stretches from Moscow to Vladivostock on the Pacific coast. Now a vital transport artery, the railway played a crucial role in the Russian Civil War, and saved the country from defeat in World War 2. It was the most ambitious railway project of the nineteenth century and its construction changed history.

The tour of Sri Lanka consisted of steam charters; in particular, taking a steam-hauled train back to Jaffna and Kankesanthurai for the first time in 40 years. The tours of Cambodia and Vietnam were rail-oriented land cruises, using mainly modern traction.
"Battle of Waterloo" (15th May) – Picture used on Rupert's website is of a battle in 1807! Previous evenings have included documentaries, BTC publicity, vintage adverts, cartoons, and excerpts from home movies. Films feature railway subjects, but trams, buses, canals, docks and air travel have also made an appearance.

"1960's Excursion Traffic to Windsor" (27th March) – Didn't try asking John for a photo, and the book "Windsor to Slough: A Royal Branch Line" noted that there was no list of the excursions that visited Windsor. So, just had to pick a Castle from Commons instead...

Windsor, with its castle, race course and trips on the Thames, was always a popular destination for excursion trains from all over the country.
John Coke has a life-long passion for the Windsor branch lines and will present his research into the rare motive power used for this special traffic.
"Amtrak Across America" (20th March) – Photo is a 'Featured Picture' on Wikimedia Commons, and selected for main pic in Wikipedia article about the California Zephyr. Needed to 'custom crop' in Irfanview to zoom-in on train (preserving the aspect ratio, although seems to be shorter than the DFR pic.)
Facebook event: used the original photo, uncropped – larger image = more dramatic result.

Barry Hodkinson
7:30pm, at 'The Manor', Slough Station (directions)
A DVD look at who and what made the railways work: the men and machines that were the unsung heroes who supported those in the public eye but were rarely seen or thought about.
The locomotives, drivers and fireman were merely the tip of the iceberg in the massive organisation that was British Rail!
"Smithy's Spottings" (27th February) – the last to use what was essentially the old layout, but with a picture.
Facebook event: photo cropped above/below train to suit news feed posts.

Next Meeting:

Smithy's Spottings
Keith Smith
CHANGE OF PROGRAMME (see below)
Keith will be presenting a varied railway evening, starting on the London Underground – historical, celebrations, and the present scene – narrow gauge railways in Wales, and France; museums and a few trams; and some main line steam (and a few Class 67s) to finish.
'A bit of something for everyone, and a few odd places not visited before.'
7:30pm at 'The Manor', Slough Station (directions here)
"Czech This Out!" (20th February) – Jim Ballantyne provided a photo with superimposed text, the first slide from his presentation. Such photos are very difficult to use on Facebook: essentially needed to zoom in on the train and crop heavily to remove the text.

Next Meeting:
Friday: 20th February 2015
Czech This Out!
Jim Ballantyne
Jim describes a comprehensive visit to the Czech Republic in 2014 with several special steam trains as well as other forms of transport.

"Transport Mix" (13th February) – Rob's photo was the original example on the Publicity Guidelines page for the different cropping needs of website and Facebook.

Next Meeting:
Friday: 13th February 2015
Transport Mix
Rob Holder
A varied evening of transport-related subjects including 'around Slough', London Transport, and the SWRS visits to Bristol and Bressingham.
There will also be some unique stories from behind-the-scenes, 'air-side' at Heathrow.
7:30pm at 'The Manor', Slough Station (directions here)
6th February – This first "Big Screen Transport Mix" montage was created in Page Plus using a selection of P Jewell's photos from 2008. Such montages can be tricky to use on website AND Facebook, due to the differing form factors, but are sometimes necessary.

January 2015 – Several meetings missed out on having photos due to a hard disk failure. Only simple edits were possible during this period.
30th January – "Winter Railwayana and Miscellaneous Auction" – no photo used.
23rd January – "The Digital Year 2014" (Jim Ballantyne) – no photo used.
16th January –" Network South East Story" – Chris Green's talk is what really started the new publicity policy. The Facebook 'likes' just kept rolling in: doubling in the space of a week (~80 –> ~160). We must have been doing something right...
This photo is from Wikimedia Commons to show off the NSE livery. Personal bias here – the Class 121 'Bubble cars' are a favourite – but having seen the talk, I think Chris would have preferred a photo of the Class 165 or 166 Thames Turbo trains, representing the 'new order' introduced under his watch, rather than the stock he was aiming to replace!

Hear how Network South East was set up and run, with insights into how the station lampposts turned red overnight, the ordering of the Networkers and other tales of NSE...

9th January – "Big Screen Ciné – Archive Transport Films" (Frank Banfield) – no photo.
2nd January – "Big Screen Transport Film Presentations" – showing the general format before photos were used. Layout was like this pretty much from 'day one', although mostly there was no strap-line text available (except for auctions and Frank Banfield's evenings).
Also shown is the extra 'Christmas' banner, used for the last 2-3 weeks of December above the 'Next Meeting' banner.
For late Dec 2014 - early Jan 2015 the 'Christmas' banner was modified to include an HTML5 animation. It was added in a hurry to advertise Chris Green's talk as there was already a 'Programme Change' box below 'Next Meeting', and there just wasn't room for anything else!
Next Meeting: Friday: 2nd January 2015

The arch-rivals pit their wits and railway knowledge contesting for the prestigious "Rocket" trophy.
Bradshaw's Guides and Handbooks were the essential companions
for any railway traveller for over a century.
Dr Turner examines Bradshaw's career and life, the output of his company, its relationship with the railways, and the often satirised reputation Bradshaw's timetables had for both utility and indecipherability.
