Hybrid Zoom meeting *

Kaliningrad is a port city on the Baltic Sea, to the west of Russia, between Lithuania and Poland. It is one of the largest industrial centres in Russia, and home to the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy.
The presentation is a medley of Kaliningrad transport themes, covering trams, trolleybuses and trains plus other observations of this Russian enclave from a trip by our Chairman in September 2022.
Please see the Programme page for more about Friday meetings.
* This will be a 'hybrid' Zoom evening: the meeting will take place at The Manor, and everyone is encouraged to attend in person; but for those who are unable to do so, the presentation will also be shared via the Zoom video conferencing software: please contact Frank Taylor to take part.

Frank Banfield presents another of his very popular evenings of archive 16mm ciné film, shown using a vintage projector on our big screen.
Previous evenings have included documentaries, BTC publicity, vintage adverts, cartoons, and excerpts from home movies. Films mostly feature railway subjects, but trams, buses, canals, docks, heavy road haulage and air travel may also make an appearance. The December shows usually have a bit of a festive twist too.
This is the last SWRS meeting before Christmas – our 'party' – so there will also be party food (please 'bring and share'!) and hopefully the 'Beer Train' will make its annual appearance on the model railway.
Please see the Programme page for more about Friday meetings.

Yes! It's time for the Annual SWRS Photo Competition.
Members have been busy submitting their photographs to the SWRS Webmaster to collate, and we should be in for a good evening, with guest judge, photographer Peter Robins.
The closing date has passed, and we will be holding the competition at The Manor on Friday night as usual. The evening will also be shown live on Zoom, allowing some of our more distant members to participate (in some way!).
As ever, it's a festive social evening, so do join us for drinks and nibbles at the break, (please 'bring and share' some party food)! !

The term 'Modern Traction' is open to interpretation. What is 'modern'?'
To the early Victorians, even steam traction was modern; for the late Victorians, electric traction and Underground railways were the new thing. What about the GWR's streamlined AEC diesel railcars? The LMS diesel 10000? Modernisation scheme diesels? Or the Inter-city 125, the APT-E, Eurostar, Pendolino?
Well, I think Shaun may be showing us footage of preserved diesel locomotives running on heritage railways, but I hope to confirm that before the end of the week. Regardless, it's bound to be another great evening at The Manor!

Christian Wolmar
7:45pm, at 'The Manor', Slough Station (directions)

Crossrail is a new railway line under central London. Its route runs from Reading and Heathrow in the west, to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, using 42kms of new tunnels.
Since project approval in 2007, Christian Wolmar has closely followed the construction of the line, and visited many of the construction sites. His book, "The Story of Crossrail" was due to be published shortly before the anticipated opening of the line in 2018...
Some four years later, the Elizabeth Line – as it is now known – is finally (almost) fully open. Wolmar has published a revised and expanded edition of his book to record the many tribulations, delays and cost increases that beset the project over those years.
Christian Wolmar is an award-winning writer and broadcaster specialising in transport and is the author of a series of books on railway history. He is acknowledged as one of the UK's leading commentators on transport matters, and we are delighted that he is making a welcome return visit to The Manor.

Gordon Adams is descended from a family who lived in the area before the Railway Age and worked for the railways for over 120 years until his father retired in 1981. He knows Eastleigh well from his days as a trainspotter and visits to the Running Shed and Workshops.

HS2 is the largest infrastructure project in Europe; conceived to significantly increase railway capacity by moving fast trains from the East Coast, West Coast, and Midland main lines. The project has attracted more than its fair share of controversy: critics will cite ballooning costs and environmental impact; proponents will argue the need for network improvements, the jobs created, and the benefits to the public and the economy. Whatever your viewpoint, HS2 is more than just a high-speed railway line.
Keith Hoffmeister, a member of the Chiltern Society, has been photographing the HS2 route ever since the plans were first revealed in 2010. He covered the whole route from Euston to Birmingham and published a DVD in 2012 as part of the Stop HS2 campaign.

History of China
Wolfgang Meyenberg
7:45pm, at 'The Manor', Slough Station (directions)
_Cropped(400px).jpg)
The history of China is a subject so vast that it would need a lecture lasting for some years! Rather than attempt that, Wolfgang will be shedding some light on the differences between European and Chinese histories, that is, why they evolved in very different ways. He will also briefly introduce how the Chinese script works.
Wolfgang Meyenberg is a friend of the SWRS who we met as a result of the Zoom meetings held during the Covid Lockdowns. To start this evening, Wolfgang will tell us how a German interested in railway signalling came to live in China for a couple of years and became smitten by the country, the culture, and the cuisine.
Since Wolfgang lives in Germany, this evening will be a Zoom presentation at The Manor on the big screen. (There is the possibility for others to join the Zoom meeting remotely, please contact SWRS Secretary, Frank Taylor, if this applies to you.). By the way, Wolfgang's English is excellent!
Please see the Programme page for general information about the meeting.

– The Stoke Place Railway
7:45pm, at 'The Manor', Slough Station (directions)

Just to the north of Slough, on the way to Stoke Poges, may be found Stoke Place, a 17th century Queen Anne mansion house – now a hotel – set within 26 acres of Capability Brown landscaped gardens.
Many years ago, somewhat remarkably, in a corner of those lush gardens, members of the Slough & Windsor Railway Society were able to build a 2-foot gauge railway. It was essentially a large loop, with a few sidings and an engine shed, using carriages and two engines from the Knebworth House Railway, which had closed in 1990.
This evening is an opportunity to see film, video and photos of the railway, which is also the site where No.3's restoration commenced.

Mystery Rail Trip
Meet: outside The Manor,
6:30pm latest

SWRS members are venturing out for an evening social trip away from The Manor. Our mystery destination is always a place of interest in the region, accessible easily by train from Slough, and the trip usually rounds off at a pub.
This year it's not such a mystery, unfortunately, as the original plan fell through, but we'll still be heading for the Bourne End branch line and a good pub for a pint or two and a chat.
We will meet at The Manor by 6:30pm latest – note the earlier time – catching the 19:01 train, so don't be late! As well as beer money, you will need £4.40 for the return rail fare (assuming we have sufficient railcards for group travel for all, otherwise the fare is £6.70).
Members living to the west can optionally meet us at Maidenhead station in time for the 19:25 Bourne End train. Coincidentally, that return fare is also £4.40.

Slough Estates No.3 Evening
7:45pm, at 'The Manor', Slough Station (directions)
_crop_400px.jpg)
"Slough Estates No.3" is an 0-6-0ST steam locomotive built by Hudswell Clarke, of Leeds, in 1924. It spent its entire working life on the Slough Trading Estate railway, and is now in the custodianship of Slough & Windsor Railway Society.
On closure of the Estate railway in 1973, No. 3 moved to the fledgling Mid Hants Railway. Slough & Windsor Railway Society took over custodianship during the 1980s, rescuing the parts and returning them to Slough.
After a lengthy restoration, No. 3 was returned to steam in 2000 and spent many happy years at the Swindon & Cricklade Railway. 2011 saw No. 3 move to its present home at the Middleton Railway in Leeds, close to where it was built, and is currently undergoing its second rebuild in preservation..
This evening is an opportunity to see film, video and photos of No. 3 at work in Slough, and during its restoration and subsequent preservation life.

The InterCity 125, or High Speed Train, with its distinctive streamlined power cars, marked a step-change in the fortunes of Britain's railways, and arguably brought about the renaissance of passenger travel in the UK. Introduced in 1976, the record-breaking HST sets heralded an era of faster travel in greater comfort. Their success and popularity has ensured a long life: more than forty-five years on, the units still form the mainstay of certain services.
Gary Heelas is chairman of the 125 Group, an organisation formed in 1994 to share news about HST set operations and development. The charity has since started acquiring and restoring Class 43 power cars and Mk 3 coaches in order to preserve and operate representative HST trains on heritage and mainline railways.

The mask in question is believed to be the personal protective device to be worn on public transport, although it could be a tenuous reference to Zorro...
And 'Gricer'? – a word of obscure origin – someone interested in trains and railways; a term used by rail enthusiasts to describe themselves, rather than 'train spotter' which has become a pejorative and now finds use beyond the realms of ferroequinology.
Am I right? Well, you'll have to join us for Simon's talk on Friday to find out!

David Powell is a "long term average railway modeller" (his description!), and has been part of the all-volunteer team which puts on the National Model Railway Exhibition at the NEC.
Apparently there is a low incidence of dementia amongst active railway modellers. Through a combination of observation and analysis (as he has no medical training!), David has been trying to understand why this might be. Considering the ageing demographic, this could be important research.
Should be an interesting evening.

The familiar map of the London Underground, drawn by Harry Beck in 1931, was revolutionary. It shows the layout of lines and stations in topological form, like an electric circuit diagram, rather than the strictly geographical form used until then. It has since become a cultural icon and inspired countless maps, worldwide.
But there were many maps of the Underground system before Beck's, and John Dodd is a published expert on the subject. This evening's talk will span a hundred years of progress, from the steam-powered Victorian trains of the cut-and-cover Metropolitan Railway, to the space-age Fleet Line with its automated, electric, deep-level tubes.

Quizmaster Chris Zaremba will preside over another of his popular Zoom Railway Quizzes. Questions could be on anything to do with rail transport, home or abroad (but mainly home!)
Don't worry if your railway knowledge is limited; the quiz is self-marked, with no prizes – just 'bragging rights' and a bit of fun. We always marvel at how many things we don't know about the railways of Britain!
As well as the quiz, there will be social time to chat to other members and to pass on any news you may have.
So, why not grab yourself a pen and paper, and a drink, and join us on Friday?
