The SWRS meeting scheduled for 31st December has been cancelled.

The rapid spread of the omicron variant of Covid-19 is causing major concern. Following Prof. Chris Whitty's advice: "Don't mix with people you don't have to.", and mindful of the health of our members, the Committee have felt it appropriate to cancel this Friday's meeting.

The next scheduled meeting is on 7th January 2022. It will take place via Zoom, and details will be sent to the SWRS Members' Mailing List.

Check back with the website, or our Twitter feed, for updates.

Please see the Programme page for the latest information.

The SWRS meeting scheduled for 17th December has been cancelled.

The rapid spread of the omicron variant of Covid-19 is causing major concern. Following Prof. Chris Whitty's advice: "Don't mix with people you don't have to.", and mindful of the health of our members, the Committee have felt it appropriate to cancel Friday's meeting.

Frank Banfield's archive ciné film evenings are always highly enjoyable, so hopefully it will be possible to re-schedule a show sometime in the New Year.

Please note that the "Members' Evening" on 31st December has also been cancelled. The next scheduled meeting is on 7th January 2022, and a decision will be taken nearer the time as to whether this will be held in The Manor, or will take place over Zoom.

Check back with the website, or our Twitter feed, for updates.

Please see the Programme page for the latest information.

Frank Banfield presents another of his very popular evenings of archive 16mm ciné film, shown using a vintage projector on our big screen.

Previous evenings have included documentaries, BTC publicity, vintage adverts, cartoons, and excerpts from home movies. Films mostly feature railway subjects, but trams, buses, canals, docks, heavy road haulage and air travel may also make an appearance. The December shows usually have a bit of a festive twist too.

This is the last meeting before Christmas – our 'party' – so there will also be party food (please 'bring and share'!) and hopefully the beer train will make its annual appearance on the model railway.

Please see the Programme page for the latest information.

Yes! It's time for the Annual SWRS Photo Competition.

As 2019-2021 has been a tad unhelpful in providing photographic opportunities, the SWRS competition rules were modified this year to allow photos taken at any time over the past TEN years (it's usually five), and members have been busy submitting their entries to John Fowler.

The closing date has passed, and we will be holding the competition at The Manor on Friday night as usual. This year, as a trial, the evening will also be shown live on Zoom, allowing some of our more distant members to participate (in some way!). As ever, it's a festive social evening, so do join us for drinks and nibbles at the break, (please 'bring and share' some party food)! !

Please see the Programme page for the latest information.

Stepping into the breach is the never-before-seen double act of Frank Taylor and Rob Holder (SWRS Secretary and Treasurer respectively). They will be using the SWRS's new projection equipment for an evening of miscellaneous transport videos and more. Exactly what will be seen will depend on whether all the new technology works as intended, but – as those who've seen Rob's past shows can testify – we're bound to have a great evening regardless!

London has numerous closed and abandoned railway lines and stations. Some have completely vanished leaving no physical trace, such as Holborn Viaduct and Broad Street stations in the City whilst in other places there are tantalising reminders of the past, such as Crystal Palace High Level and Spa Road Bermondsey. In some cases no longer needed railway buildings have found new uses as can be seen at Denmark Hill and Merton Park. Join Stephen as he roves across London and shares with you many of the lost and forgotten railways of London.

Stephen Benton is a qualified tour guide with Footprints of London.
A Londoner by birth, Stephen is fascinated by how and why London is like it is, with a particular interest in the way transport has shaped the city.

LNER Class B17 no. 61673 will be named Spirit of Sandringham. Of particular interest to SWRS members is that the tender that once resided with Slough Estates No.3 at Stoke Place forms part of the project.

Nigel Gresley introduced the B17 in 1927 as a lightweight yet powerful 4-6-0 to handle the severe weight restrictions on the Great Eastern Main Line between London and Cambridge, Ipswich and Norwich. The locomotives were built between 1928 and 1937. All 73 examples passed into British Railways ownership, with the last example not withdrawn until 1960. None survived into preservation.

Don't worry if your railway knowledge is limited; the quiz is self-marked, with no prizes – just 'bragging rights' and a bit of fun. We always marvel at how many things we don't know about the railways of Britain!

Dave Grant

Our historian will be telling us about the Great Western Railway's 'broad gauge': the trains and engineering related to the wider 7ft track used by the GWR until they adopted the 'standard gauge' in 1892. As well as this overview, the evening will introduce the Broad Gauge Society Modelling Group, the Broad Gauge Project at Didcot Railway Centre, and the Fire Fly and Iron Duke locomotive projects.

Dave Grant is a member of both the SWRS and the Great Western Society, Didcot, and has spent a great deal of time researching the broad gauge era of the GWR.

Steam locomotive Metropolitan Railway E-Class 0-4-4T at Moorgate station.

This week, quizmaster Chris Zaremba will preside over another of his popular Zoom Railway Quizzes. Questions could be on anything to do with rail transport, home or abroad (but mainly home!)

Don't worry if your railway knowledge is limited; the quiz is self-marked, with no prizes – just 'bragging rights' and a bit of fun. We always marvel at how many things we don't know about the railways of Britain!

As well as the quiz, there will be social time to chat to other members and to pass on any news you may have.

So, why not grab yourself a pen and paper, and a drink, and join us on Friday?

Two H/V colour light signals at a station in Ahrensburg, Germany.

This evening is a milestone for Slough & Windsor Railway Society, as we welcome our first overseas Zoom speaker, Wolfgang Meyenberg, all the way from Germany.

To the enthusiast familiar with British practice, the signalling used on German railways may appear rather complicated. Fortunately, Wolfgang is an expert on the subject (and speaks fluent English!) and will be able to tell us the difference between a Hauptsignal and a Vorsignal; where we might see a Geschwindigkeitsvoranzeiger; who needs a Schneepflugsignal; and a great deal more besides.
